There is no bad time to build a swimming pool. Winter projects take longer to build but are ready by the time warm weather hits. It is my job to design your backyard to fit: fit your home, your aesthetic, your wants and wishes, and your budget. It is my job to translate all your wants into something you can dive into. Whether shotcrete construction with the exposed aggregate finish or poured wall/vinyl liner hybrid pools, paver, wood, stone, concrete, tile; there are so many choices! Decking

It is tremendously important to have the right pool deck design. The pool deck can be created by using different materials:

• My preference is to use stone in dedicated areas, and not the entire deck.

Pool Equipment

Hydraulics is “the science and technology concerned with the conveyance of liquids through pipes and channels”. Wilson Pools is one of the select few companies in the State of Georgia to have a Certification in Hydraulics. This certification is only required for commercial hydraulic analyses (a service we provide for ourselves and other commercial pool builders) but we provide the same hydraulic analysis for each residential pool we build to ensure you have a balance equipment set.

I base my preferences on pool equipment on an overall value which includes performance, price, and the level of customer service from the manufacturer. The purpose of any pool equipment is to provide filtration, enhance beauty, and/or ensure the safety of the swimmer. It is critical that filtration equipment is based on the results of a full hydraulic analysis. The most common mistake I see on site when performing a Complete Swimming Pool Diagnostic Checklist is a pump too large coupled with pipe diameter and filter that are too small. This common occurrence reduces the level of filtration, wastes money on electricity, increases chemical costs, and shortens the life of expensive equipment.

My preferences on equipment are as follows

Pentair Pumps and Sand Filters

• Starting in 2021, all new pumps will be variable speed to reduce electrical consumption and a swimming pool’s carbon footprint. These pumps are a bit more on the front end but have an ROI of approximately 3 years. We can calculate the money that can be saved by using a VS pump. VS pumps are part of our tier 2 and tier 3 equipment pads.
• Glass beads can be used instead of sand in filters to reduce expensive and messy changes
• DE or Commercial Grade Cartridge Filters may be substituted if the client wishes.
• Robotic cleaners represent the new standard in pool cleaning

Led lights

• Color, programmable lights make your pool GLOW
• With Tier 2 and Tier 3 automation, light shows can be programmed

Pentair Automation

• Tier 1 Equipment pads have Intelliconnect, which allows you to use an app to control your pool
• Tier 2 and Tier 3 utilize the Easytouch automation

The Ups and Downs

I have never been to a yard where a swimming pool could not be built due to terrain. Use slight elevation changes, hillsides, and mountainsides in the design to achieve exciting results. I like to create elevation changes even on level yards:

Retaining walls and/or raised bond beams can be incorporated into the overall design for dramatic effects.

The right design of the steps when changing deck levels creates an easy flow and open feel of your poolscape.

Negative edge pools can be built on relatively flat yards.

Ask me how I can create the “feel” of a negative or infinity-edge without the cost of a negative edge!

What to Do, What to Do

Do’s:

• We will call 811 for you to check for underground services
• LED lights are a must
• Get a robotic cleaner, now or later
• Run extra electrical amperage for future use
• Have us run plumbing and conduit now for future plans
• Sleeve spare pipes under sidewalks before they are poured for possible future use
• If you are building a new house, save money and have the electrician run the electrical for a future pool and hot tub
• When comparing quotes make sure you are comparing apples to apples, not all pools are built alike
• Make sure a hydraulics analysis is run to establish your plumbing and equipment needs
